A

Arm / Tonearm – The pivoted arm on a turntable that holds the cartridge and stylus.
Anti-Skate – Mechanism that counteracts inward pull of tonearm toward the center.
Analog Audio – Audio represented by continuous electrical signals, like vinyl playback.
Automatic Turntable – Turntable that starts, stops, and returns the tonearm automatically.
Audiophile – Listener focused on high-fidelity sound reproduction.

Belt Drive – Turntable where motor drives the platter via a belt for vibration isolation.
Beatmatching – DJ technique syncing tempos of two tracks for seamless mixing.
Braking / Brake Lever – Mechanism to slow or stop platter rotation.
Back-Cueing – Manually spinning record backward to cue music for DJs.

Cartridge – Assembly at the end of tonearm holding the stylus and converting grooves into electrical signals.
Cueing Lever / Lift – Mechanism for raising and lowering the tonearm gently.
Crossfader – Mixer control allowing smooth transition between two audio sources.
Counterweight – Weight at the back of tonearm balancing stylus pressure.
Cloth Mat / Platter Mat – Surface on platter to reduce vibration and protect records.

Direct Drive – Turntable where motor spins platter directly, common for DJ use.
DJ Turntable – Designed for scratching, beatmatching, and professional use.
Drive System – Mechanism transferring motor motion to the platter (belt or direct).
Dust Cover – Protective lid preventing dust accumulation on turntable.

EQ / Equalizer – Adjusting frequency response of audio signal.
Electronic Speed Control – Digital or analog system for precise platter speed adjustment.
Emitter / Optical Sensor – Used in some turntables to detect platter rotation.

Frequency Response – Range of audio frequencies a turntable or cartridge can reproduce.
Foam / Rubber Mat – Platter surface used to reduce vibration and static.
Fader / Crossfader – Control for mixing audio between two sources.

Groove – Spiral indent on a vinyl record storing audio information.
Ground Wire / GND – Wire connecting turntable to amplifier to reduce hum.
Gain / Preamp Gain – Level of signal boost from phono cartridge to line level.

Headshell – Removable part of tonearm holding cartridge.
Hydraulic / Magnetic Lift – Smooth tonearm lifting mechanisms.

I

Idler Wheel / Bearing – Component in older turntables transferring motor rotation.
Insert / Slipmat – Material placed between record and platter for DJ scratching.
Input / Phono Input – Amplifier input specifically for turntable signal with RIAA equalization.

Jitter / Wow & Flutter – Variations in speed causing pitch instability.
Jog Wheel / Platter Control – Rotatable surface on DJ turntables for cueing and scratching.

Kerf / Cutting Groove – Width of groove cut on a vinyl master disc.

Linear Tracking Tonearm – Tonearm moving in a straight line across record to reduce tracking error.
Lift Lever / Cue Lever – Mechanism raising/lowering tonearm.
Load / Stylus Pressure – Force of stylus on vinyl groove.


M

Manual Turntable – Tonearm must be placed and removed by hand.
Motor Types – AC, DC, or brushless motor powering platter.
Mixing / Crossfading – Blending two audio sources seamlessly.
Mono / Stereo Record – Single-channel vs dual-channel audio grooves.

Needle / Stylus – Tip of cartridge that contacts record groove.
Noise / Surface Noise – Audible hiss, pops, or clicks from vinyl imperfections.
