Transformers

Transformers perform different electrical tasks, from component-level voltage conversion to enclosed step-down supplies. Compare the NZ assortment by input, output, rating and installation format, keeping AC transformer outputs distinct from regulated DC power supplies.

Toroidal and component transformers

Round toroidal transformer with mounting bolt and coloured leads - Transformers at Tech Supply Shed NZ
MT2082 20VA 9V-0-9V Toroidal Transformer (MT2082)

Match the winding and mounting format

Toroidal and other component transformers provide specified winding arrangements for designed circuits. Compare primary and secondary ratings, VA capacity and mounting dimensions with the design requirement. A centre-tapped output is not the same as a single output, and a bare transformer needs appropriate enclosure, protection and installation rather than direct consumer use.

Enclosed step-down transformers

Black enclosed step-down transformer with socket panel - Transformers at Tech Supply Shed NZ
Isolated Stepdown Transformer 500W 240-120V (MF1084)

Check the appliance requirements

Enclosed step-down products provide specified lower AC output voltages from a compatible input. Check appliance voltage, frequency compatibility and load before choosing. A voltage transformer does not generally convert mains frequency, and the continuous rating and any starting-load requirement need to suit the actual connected appliance.

Lighting transformers

MP3045 Lighting Transformer 150VA 240V-24VAC

Match the lamp system specification

Lighting-transformer listings provide different low-voltage AC outputs and capacity ratings. Confirm whether the connected lights require AC or DC, and check the supported load and any control compatibility. A lighting transformer is not automatically an LED driver or a regulated DC adapter, even where the nominal voltage is the same.

How to Choose Transformers

Output and rating

Read the winding arrangement and AC output specification, then compare the required current and VA or watt rating in the appropriate context. Different ratings should not be treated as interchangeable without the design information. Audio line and coupling transformers in the assortment also serve separate signal applications.

Installation and safety

Confirm whether the product is enclosed or is a component for equipment construction. Terminal-connected and internal mains work require appropriate expertise, enclosure and compliance. Do not select from a photograph alone or use a component transformer as an exposed household adapter; follow the actual manufacturer documentation and installation requirements.

Top Brands in Transformers

Powertech: Powertech is the recorded vendor for the active transformer assortment. Its listings include toroidal, enclosed step-down, lighting and audio-related formats, whose outputs and installation requirements differ. Compare the exact winding, load and mounting specification rather than assuming a single application across the range.
