LED bulbs for everyday lighting

Compare output and colour temperature

LED bulb listings include warm-white and other colour options for different fittings. Use lumen output to compare brightness and the stated colour temperature to assess the appearance of the light. Check the lamp base and dimming compatibility; a bulb being LED does not make it suitable for every fitting, enclosed fixture or dimmer.

Halogen and specialist replacements

Start with the existing lamp specification

Halogen capsules and specialist globes need careful matching of base, voltage and wattage. Measure the available space and check the fitting documentation before substituting a different lamp type. A 12V globe is not a direct mains replacement, and an accessory such as a lamp base is not a complete light source.

How to Choose Light Globes

Base, shape and supply

Identify the existing base or pin arrangement, supply voltage and clearance. Screw, bayonet, wedge and capsule fittings are not interchangeable. Check the fixture label rather than judging from a photograph, and confirm whether a low-voltage lamp uses AC, DC or a documented compatible supply.

Brightness and appearance

Compare lumens separately from watts, since energy consumption does not directly describe visible output across different lamp technologies. Choose colour temperature for the room or task. For specialty UV or black-light products, read the intended purpose and precautions instead of treating them as ordinary room-lighting replacements.

Controls and accessories

Check whether the bulb is dimmable and whether the existing control supports that lamp type. Smart bulbs may require a particular network or app. Fluorescent replacement arrangements and adaptor kits also need product-specific checks, so use an appropriate installer where changes to fixed electrical equipment are necessary.
