What Do WiFi 6, WiFi 6E, and WiFi 7 Actually Mean?

The jump from 6 to 6E is really about extra, less congested radio space. The jump to 7 is about how efficiently that space gets used. Both matter for different reasons, which is why the "just buy the newest one" instinct doesn't always hold up.
WiFi 6 (802.11ax): The Standard Most NZ Homes Already Have
WiFi 6 is still the sensible default for most households on a UFB fibre connection. It uses OFDMA to split channels more efficiently between multiple devices, supports up to 1024-QAM modulation, and handles busy, device-heavy homes noticeably better than older WiFi 5 hardware, even though its headline top speed (up to roughly 9.6 Gbps across all streams combined, not per device) rarely gets close to being the bottleneck in a typical house.

WiFi 6E: The 6GHz Bridge Standard
WiFi 6E adds the 6GHz band, which is largely free of the interference and congestion that builds up on the older, more crowded 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, since 6E-only devices are the main thing using it so far. That's genuinely useful in apartment blocks and dense suburbs where dozens of neighbouring routers are all fighting for the same 5GHz channels.
Here's the New Zealand-specific detail worth knowing: the 6GHz band isn't a free-for-all everywhere in the world, and rules vary by country. In New Zealand, Radio Spectrum Management (part of MBIE) opened the lower portion of the band, 5925–6425 MHz, for WLAN use under low-power and very-low-power rules from August 2022, with the wider 5925–7125 MHz range still under separate consideration. In practical terms, that means 6GHz WiFi does work here, but only within that lower slice of the band, so it's worth checking a device's regional certification rather than assuming a spec sheet written for the US or Europe applies unchanged in NZ.

WiFi 7 keeps everything WiFi 6E has (all three bands, including 6GHz) and adds real technical upgrades on top: channels up to 320MHz wide (double WiFi 6's maximum), 4096-QAM modulation for more data per signal, and Multi-Link Operation (MLO), which lets a single device use more than one band at the same time instead of picking just one. On paper that adds up to headline speeds well beyond what any home internet plan currently sold in NZ can use end to end, but the real-world benefit for most households is lower latency and steadier performance when a lot of devices are active at once, not just a bigger top-line number.
WiFi 7 is worth considering now if you're setting up a new build, doing a whole-home mesh refresh, or you have (or plan to buy) WiFi 7-capable client devices, since the router side of things is only half the equation. A well-specced WiFi 6 router is usually enough. The main upside of 6E or 7 here is less interference from neighbouring networks, which matters more in high-density apartment buildings than in standalone houses.

WiFi 6 comfortably handles a typical household of phones, laptops, smart TVs and IoT devices. If you're doing a full router or mesh replacement anyway and want it to last several years, stepping up to WiFi 7 is a reasonable future-proofing choice, since prices on entry-level WiFi 7 hardware have come down close to previous-generation WiFi 6 pricing.

This is where WiFi 7's Multi-Link Operation and wider channels earn their keep, particularly in homes with many devices competing for bandwidth at once.
